The Hunter Mens Club has elected to continue its association for another year with the NEPL, the oldest golf association in New England. This is a good association and a great opportunity for members to play some nice courses throughout southern New England.
Some have unfairly noted that only a few get to participate in these events. This may be true but because ONLY a few tryout for these three events. Yes, you have to be 50 years old and a pretty good golfer to qualify for the Senior event which is a gross (no handicap) tournament. And yes, you have to be one of the best club players to make the two-day championship which is also a gross event. BUT anyone can qualify and play in the All-Net event. This is a handicap only tournament, so all you sand-baggers have a great chance to play if you try to qualify. In the past, we have attempted to limit participation in more than one event to allow for more participation. Unfortunately, this resulted in the Men's Club barely being able to field a complete team (8 to 10 players each event).
Some have also complained about the tournaments being schedule on weekdays. Please be aware that the host courses are disrupting normal play during the prime summer days. Obviously, like Hunter, these clubs do not want to interfere with member play by closing their course on the weekend. I can only suggest that by letting you know the tournament dates far in advance, you can plan for possibly qualifying to play in one of these events.
Finally, some have complained about the cost of participating in the three NEPL events. You should know that the final annual cost (divided by the three tournaments) falls between the prize payout for a normal weekend event and a typical major tournament. However, in recognition of the current fiscal situation, we may be looking to increase the entry fee and revise qualification format. Also, we may be requesting some cost sharing on the part of the qualified players. As an example, 28 successful qualifiers (total for the three tournaments) times a $20 co-pay will result in a $560 return to the men's club. Realizing that the men's club has paid for all qualifiers' tournament entry fees, meals and golf carts (in most cases), this is still a great deal.
More details to follow as soon as the Executive Board discusses the matter more thoroughly. A fundraiser is also not out of the question...
